This week there were several events that generated a significant level of owned brand social media campaigns capitalizing on each of these – the birth of a princess, Cinco de Mayo (May 5th), Star Wars Day (May the 4th be with you) and the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight .

Birth of a Princess #RoyalBaby
Adweek published a compilation of a range of brand tweets for the birth of the princess – now named Charlotte Elizabeth Diana. The #royalbaby hashtag became a trending topic.
Cinco de Mayo – #CincodeMayo
Meanwhile on the 5th of May or Cinco de Mayo, brands jumped on the day with some good and some bad tweets as part of their real time marketing campaigns to celebrate Mexico’s defeat of the French in 1862. #CincodeMayo was the hashtag in use for these campaigns.

On Facebook, Taco Bell was given the crown for their engagement as measured by People Talking about This (PTAT) on Cinco de Mayo according to reports by Social Times with data provided by Mavrck, a social media monitoring company.
On a local level, Milwaukee Home jumped on the occasion to have some fun with Cinco de Mayo with their Instagram post converting their iconic image into a Mexican Milwaukee home.
May the 4th be with you – #StarWarsDay
CNBC jumped into the fray with a compilation of the best and worst brand tweets associated with May 4th and Star Wars Day, but somehow they missed the Scott Walker tweet referenced below. Meanwhile, in his pre-launch communications efforts, unannounced Presidential candidate and current Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker jumped on the Star Wars bandwagon with a tweet that some thought went to far.
Pacquaio – Mayweather Bout #PacquaioMayweather of #MayPac
Butterfinger made a deal with #Manny Pacquiao and used Twitter to tout the relationship and support their brand strategy.

Nestle KitKat in the Philippines jumped into the fray with a tweet after the Pacquaio loss that showcased the boxers connection to his homeland.
